Good I am glad you are not giving up.

I doubt I can help with the search not knowing exactly what the permissions are on the required folders etc etc on your server. Its not a matter of looking at the file structures so much at this stage as looking at the files on the server and the script instructions and any error messages.

I dont know if using frames has any effect on the search scripts you are using. I do know that when search engines find your site and index your pages, they wont index side frames along with the main pages always you will get the main pages only coming up a lot of the times like this

a typical SE results page link so people wont know where that page has come from as there is no home link

Just thought would mention.

Why dont you contact the firm offering the script and give them the error message and also ask them how much they would charge to instal. They would probably get it done while you have a cup of coffee!! .. Okay they may not be cheap in which case you can go back to trying to sort it. But surely with all this stress it is causing you, nothing is lost by asking them.

At this point, it's a matter of principle

I thought that at first too so I went in, and made sure that I cmoded 755 on the search.pl, and made sure it is executable. The root, and all subfolders are readable by everyone.

You know, I didn't even think about that. The recipe files do not have that either. Hmm that is a dilemma. I might have to check my cookbooks and see if I can add a custom header and include a link to home. but that will create problems if people that are browsing the recipes click on it. Goodness, it took 2 days to upload the site, re-doing all the recipes...geesh....Oh well, if it has to be done, it has to be done.

Been there, done that. All I was offered was a mailing list. I was instructed to copy and paste the configuration portion of the script it in a message to the group. I fail to see how posting a message to a mailing list that I am not on is going to help me, but I did it anyway.

(As the ominous, spooky organ music plays in the background)

I tried that google free search engine to where you define it. It too came up empty.

(The organ music swells, a thud is heard, a woman screams, another idea has died)

Did they refuse to give you a quote for instaling it then?

I just asked them and they charge $20 dollars to instal the script. So perhaps that is a small price to pay for all the hassle you are getting now??

Yes, I told me that they don't install. I'm of course talking about NMS.

csSearch I have not asked becuse it can not even be configured. They will not be able to run the setup utility. It bombs out.

Good point, but I don't see how they will be able to since the setup utility will not run. Doing it by hand would be very time consuming, and I can't imagine spending that much time on something for only $20.00.

Oh yea, nearly forgot to mention, Metapad works like a charm. What a great text editor! Thank you very much for pointing me to that.

Jim.

csSearch - well that was the script I gave you last and recomended you tried and you agreed you would, so I naturally assumed that was the script you were talking about, you didnt say you were talking about the other script.

"I have not asked becuse it can not even be configured". - Well, I have done as much as I can to help you. Even to finding a script where they offer to instal. Either you accept their offer or you dont. But as they are the experts and not you or me, maybe they know the answer to your problem and can fix it in seconds. One thing I do know .... you wont know unless you ask them to instal it. I am sure you are not the only person who has had a problem installing a script becuase something doesnt work. They can at least say to you ..... "can you ask your host to do ... whatever" then we can instal it .... they can possibly tell you what is wrong and how to fix it. You can even tell them you have tried but it doesnt work maybe something is wrong on the server. They can always say to you okay we will take a look and then if something we know how to fix it will cost you $25 to instal!! Sometimes someone has to go and look at your files on the server or try to instal then go and look - remote help like this forum often cannot go far enough to help becuase of restrictions in not being able to have a go ourselves to see what goes wrong and then to take a look etc etc. They may say you need to change hosts to one that offers .. whatever ... or ????? Only they will be able to tell you. It is their script they must have come across your problem before.

Unless you ask them .......

you keep saying they wont or they cant .... but you dont know, we are trying to help you here, you need to follow up on some of our suggestions. Ive done all the leg work for you. I found a script that comes highly recomended. I have even asked them how much they charge to instal. It is now up to you to go to them and just say you hae tried to instal but you cant. Will they ... even if they cant, surely it is worth $20 for them to tell you why it wont instal and perhaps tell you what to do to allow it to instal. ??? Then maybe they will do the instal for you. or having given you the fix you will be able to.

All I know is I cant help anymore but I have found you someone who know more than me and knows more than you, who possibly can help. I suggest you ask them. Forget excuses about you dont see how they can ... just go and ask them ....like I did. If they say "no" at least then you would know 100% and also know that you wont ever be able to instal any script so you can then give up trying. But until you get an expert to look at it for you..... and I am not an expert on that subject. They are.

I still have it in place, and am still trying to get it to work. I finally took your advice, and contacted them, asking about getting it installed. I can't thank you enough for your assistance. Once it's up and running, I'll let you know. Hopefully, it should be within a couple of days.

I did install a feature to where if you own a copy of BigOven Cookbook software, you can do a direct import into your cookbook with one click. I'm working on the post a recipe to my site. I would really enjoy some authentic English recipes. The cookbook as a browser window built right into it. It is the most unique program that I have tried. It's only $29.95, and for the price it's amazing. You can get a free trial version that lasts for I think 30 days at http://www.bigoven.com/recipe-software.aspx I have so many irons in the fire that It's getting difficult to keep up. It's a very good thing that I'm retired, otherwise I would never have the time for any of this.

I still have not heard back from csSearch, but wouldn't you know it, not 1/2 hour after sending them an email, I got my NMS script working. My site now has a recipe search in it. Not the old site, the new one. http://www.jimslaptop.com

I have to do some tweaking to it for appearance and all, but hooray it works!!!
