A New Problem has popped up

I'm posting this in this area because it seems to be the best place. I just hope it doesn't cause a huge rip in the space-time continuum because it's in the wrong area, resulting in forum-wide famine, disease, and pestilence, and the destruction of the Universe as we know it.

Okay all you Windows XP IE Explorer 6x gurus out there. Here's a stumper for you. When surfing the net, if I want to see the source code of a page, I would right click on the page, and a shortcut window would pop up. I could then select view source, and it would load the HTML code into notepad for me so I could view it, or save it as a guideline. It still works in Fire-fox, so I know it's not a file association problem with windows. What Explorer does now, and this came on suddenly without warning , is when I select view source it opens my desktop in a window.

How do I get it back to where it was?

Thanks,
Jim.

Hey Ho,
Opens your desktop in a window .... what sort of window an IE window or a folder type window?

What version IE do you use, IE8 I hope (!)

What happens if you click on View/source opposed to right clicking? Just want to see if they both work the same ..... what a wierd problem.

Do you have any shortcuts to Notepad on your desktop or a folder called notepad on your desktop? if so delete them (or in the case of the folder rename or move it elsewhere.)

Any luck with this? I know if you have a shortcut to notepad or a folder called notepad on your desktop it can cause the browser to open that desktop link. I am hoping it is something as simple as that.

also making sure your IE is updated with all the latest updates gets rid of lots of bugs including security issues. So if you dont have the latest updates perhaps get those and see if that helps. Even if it doesnt it will help something else in the long run.

I am using IE6, 7 or 8 will not run on this system. Tried them both, and both turned out be be a complete disaster.m much like SP-3 for XP. It tore my system up so bad, I had to reformat the drive and reinstall XP fresh. I'll never do another "windows update". That is the fourth time one of their supposed updates/service packs completely destroyed one of my systems.

it opens a window as though I doubled clicked on My Computer. It's as though I navigated into the administrator's folder, and opened the desktop folder. This started about a month ago, out of the blue.

Nope. The only links on my desktop are the standard windows icons. My Computer, network Neighborhood, and Recycle Bin.

I'm using the classic setting because I'm lost with XP's normal setup. Like I said, it was working fine up until recently, then all of a sudden, this happened. There was no error, no crash, no warning....

Gosh not sure what is wrong there, I have XP in the study and I have IE8 on it and no problem at all, maybe there is something on your system contributing to non ability to update. I get notified of all updates vie a KBalert email and I know there have been quite a few for IE6 recently. It might just be there is some sort of bug that makes your error happen and it can be fixed. I tend to delete them if they dont apply to me, but one came in yesterday which was:

Internet Explorer 6.0
---------------------

980088 Microsoft Security Advisory: Vulnerability in Internet Explorer could allow information disclosure
----------------------

Anyway .....

Make sure notepad is the default editor for viewing source code make sure IE knows it .. it might be for some reason that has got disabled.

What happens if you click on view/source code opposed to right clicking inside a window.

I am not sure I can help any further on this as I have not heard of that problem before. Do you know any friendly computer geeks who can take a look at your system and see what is causing these problems? It might be something simple. I know I have had no problem on XP with SP3 or updating to IE7 and then 8, so not sure it has anything to do with it being XP ...??

Not sure where to go from here...

Okay I have just seen your second post. If it opens up My Computer then try deleting the shortcut to My Computer from your desktop. I know there is a bug with IE6 (I did a google for your problem and came up with a few solutions all referring to notepad and all referncing IE6, so I assumed it applied to other IE versions as well .. then you say you are using IE6 .. so ??? umm . I wonder .....) whereby if you have a shortcut to notepad.exe or a folder called notepad that will open instead of the source code, so maybe the same applies with the My Computer icon ....

might be worth a try. Reboot puter after you delete it.

You have run a virus check? if not might be worth doing.
Another option is to reinstall IE6 or run a repair. That might just fix whatever has gone wrong. Assuming the error is with IE and not something else on the system.

Nope, nothing on the desktop. No folder with the name either. No viruses. With Fire-Fox it works as it should. It's just Explorer. Hmmm, a Microsoft product with an baffling problem, how novel!!

I checked and notepad is the defined editor. I just put the edit button on the tool bar. That brings the page up in notepad.

I put my site up on the new server, and it's the same story, none of my scripts will run. they bomb out, but now, not only do I not have a search, I don't have form email, counter, or a guest book. As incompetent as they are, I'm going to stay with the original server, and forget about upgrading my site. it has sufficed as it is for 10 years, it can go another 10. I'm defeated, and I give up. I've had enough. This is supposed to be fun, and relaxing, not be a source of stress and frustration.

Sorry I thought you said you had the My Computer on your desktop? maybe I misunderstood.

What scripts do your email and guestbook use? Are they FrontPage ones? if so have you enabled the FrontPage Extensions on the server?

As far as search why dont you ask the company that offers that last script I showed you how much they will charge to instal. Let them do it for you. They will have come across problems before and overcome them. No harm in just asking them how much they would charge?

If you are using the FrontPage Extensions have you tried using FrontPage search component?
