    Editing Live

Is there supposed to be an icon in your toolbar for live editing in frontpage. I thought that I had seen it at one point, but now it is nowhere to be found. Can someone please tell me how to get this little icon back and then explain how I would go about doing a live edit and what the difference is between live editing and editing within frontpage and then saving and publishing. Well, except for the obvious, but is there an advantage to live editing? Thanks!

Hello, Here is my thoughts on what you asked:

"Is there supposed to be an icon in your toolbar for live editing in frontpage."
Yes, if you deleted it off your tool bar you need to check a few places.
    1. In your Internet Explorer Browser Go to: View >> toolbar >> customize >> you should have icon in the left window and right window make sure there is an Edit icon in the right side window.
    2. Open Frontpage go to Tools >> Options >> on the general tab make sure FP is set as your default editor. So the next time you open FP it will be set as the default.
    3. Go to Tools in Your Internet Explorer browser >> Tools >> Internet Options >> Programs >> make sure FP is set as your editor.
That should get the icon back. Something must have been changed.

"I thought that I had seen it at one point, but now it is nowhere to be found."
You did but now its gone

"How I would go about doing a live edit"
Once you get your icon back just go to your website and click on the icon and it will open FP and ask for your user name and password. Make the hanges you want and click the little diskette icon and you're done.

"what the difference is between live editing and editing within frontpage and then saving and publishing"
If you work local and publish you already have a back up of your website. If you work live, like I do, you just have to rememeber to publish back to your hard drive every once in a while sso you have a complete copy of your site.

"Well, except for the obvious, but is there an advantage to live editing?"
It is fast to fix minor things on your site. Again I build almost everything from ground up live rather than publishing. I have heard there are "linking" problems but I have never run into anything like that.

    That's my 2 cents.

Hi Robert! I am having a problem with this toolbar I think in my IE. Every now and then when I open up IE, my toolbar has completly changed and I cant find anything on it.:?: Last night when I went to bed I had my address bar and favorites on it and this morning I have nothing, just the Yahoo bar, which I could care less about. Remember I had this problem a while back and you told me to move one of the lines or something down, well, tried that, it wont work now. It is almost like my little hamster that lives in here with me gets up in the night and does things to it. Is anyone else having this problem. I know I have gotten off subject here, but I have a feeling this is why my icon is not there anymore.

Sounds like the whole tool bar got pushed up again. Just try and grab the lower edge of the toolbar the is showing and drag it down and see if the other show up.

How does that happen. I mean I can have it looking the way I want one minute and then the next time it will be all messed up again. I restarted the computer and that seemed to do the trick. Robert, were you up all night? I noticed yo uposted at 2:00 in the morning and now you are up again? Thanks Robert!

What browser are you using? I seem to be experiencing similar problems. Yesterday I rebooted and when I opened IE, all my favorites had been alphabetized. Now that may not be tragic to most people but for me it was a disaster. I have so many, and I knew right where they were. If I had wanted them alphabetically, I would have done it myself! :(: I'm using IE6 and beginning to be very sorry I changed from IE5.5

As for editing live, it is something I very rarely do. I "might" do it to make a quick correction in spelling or something and that is about it. Then I immediately make the same correction locally, then the next time I publish, my local page is the newer one and everything is back in sync.

I don't usually do live work because I can look at something a million times and never see an error until the minute I am working live off the server - and there it is - some big glaring error, like a HUGE pimple on prom night!

I can't say it is something to avoid (editing live) but for me it is. I would just as soon avoid disasters whenever possible.

And in the words of Maxine - "Not working harder, working crabbier." (from the little ceramic figurine on my shelf)

"Don't bother me until my first twelve cups of COFFEE" (from my mug)

"THINK!! Before you bug me!" (from my little dangly Maxine hanging on my paper holder)

OMG! I am so glad I am not the only one! I am using IE6. That happens to me all the time. I get so confused when I open up my IE and my toolbar is completely messed up, which might not be such a big deal, but nothing is there. No favorites button, no back button, no address bar, no refresh button, I can on and on. Do you have any suggestions. maybe I should go back to IE 5.5, they say that upgrades are better, but this happened to me with one of the AOL upgrades. It crashed my computer and I lost EVERYTHING. Had to completely restore computer. UGH! I am trying to wean myself off of AOL, but sometimes I really am tempted to start using it again.

Opinions... Opinions... 2 cents what ever.

That little Icon on the Browsers tool bar. I'ld rather see MS loose that option when it comes down to editing Websites.

    Why???

If you edit a page... A single page now. If you change an internal link on that one page... or any component tha's reflected accross the website, FP will NOT update any of the other pages that are related to that link or component. Oppps you go.

If you edit your site, use FP and open it directly as a Website in general. Any cahnges made in this fasion will carry through out the entire site giving you the results you are expecting.

Use IE as a browser Not as a means to open pages for edit. That's why you have FrontPage, use it.

    Just my two cents.

    Bud, you are so correct.

I sort of mixed up two issues in my previous post. The first one being about the mysterious changing of the browser, and the second one being editing live.

If I am going to edit something live, I do it as you describe. I open FP, and open web, putting in the server location. I do use the icon occasionally to take a look at something for someone else, maybe turning on table borders etc to get a better look at why something is happening etc. but not to save something live on one of my sites.

Sorry for any confusion my post may have caused.

    Hi Texas Girl,
I think you have been visited by the Browser Fairy. Overnight, she hacks into your pc and changes the browser. However, it doesn't just stop there -she has been known to steal HARDWARE, like.................... zip drives.
