View Full Version : Page Layout Has Changed

Two new and unusual problems have come up and I am having no success figuring out how to resolve them.

First - When I add new pictures to a page the pictures go in just fine, but I am unable to add text. When I click in the Photo Galery the Photo Gallery Properties box opens as it should and when I click Add I am able to insert new pictures as always. But when I type text into the Caption or Description box the text does appear while I'm typing, but after I click OK and look at the result all I get is the new pictures. No text. When I try this same process with a different computer then the text works just fine. I have used this computer to do this in the past without a problem, so something I have done is causing the problem, but I can't figure it out.

Second - On this same computer, the layout of FrontPage has changed. Used to be that I would have the far left column Views turned on, then next to that the Folder List and to the right of that would be the page I am working on. Now I have Views as usual and Folder list next to that, but the folder list doesn't contain all of the files as it used to. When I click Folders in the Views tool bar then I get a full page to the right of the Folder List, where the Page used to be, that lists all of my files. Just above the file list it says Contents of 'http://www.mypage.com'. If I click on Page in the Views tool bar then both the Folders List and the list of files to the right are replaced with the page I am working on. I find it very convenient to have all my files listed in the Folder List, and visible, while the open page is to the right of the Folder List.

Both of these problems came along at the same time but I don't have a clue to what I might have done to cause the problem, or if they are even related. If anyone can provide help I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi,
Re the photogallery text missing. This is (for whatever reason) related to IE. Have you installed a later version? or maybe your computer has done a recent OS/Office update. Uninstall IE then reinstall.

As for your "views" layout, I got a bit lost on your description .... lol ... but I work with folders list on the left and my open page on the right. To do that I click on the toolbar ... view/folders list ..... not sure if it matters which version FP .. I use 2003

Hi Mandy,

I did install IE version 7 from Microsoft a while back, but I don't recall when the text problem started relative to that install. I'll try uninstalling and reinstall. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Rearding the folders, sorry I wasn't clear. Just as you do, I like to work with the folders on the left and my open page on the right. In the folders window you start at the top with the folders and below them are all the files. In my case the folders list shows ONLY the folders and the files are shown in a window to the right, where my open page used to show up. Clicking Page in the Views toolbar will cause my open page to replace both the folders list and the list of files to the right of that.

So basically what I can do is toggle between a view of my open page, which takes up all the space to the right of the Views toolbar, or if I click Folders I get the Folder List, with the files shown in a window to the right of that Folders List. I can't get the Folders List and the open page to display at the same time.

One would think that if I click on the last folder in the Folder List then it would open and display all the files below the folder. But no, all the files are displayed instead in that other window to the right, where the open page used to be.

Sorry if I'm not making this clear. I appreciate your help.

You may find you have to uninstall IE7 - which is only a beta version - and reinstall IE6 .... see how you go on a reinstall of IE7 first. Dont forget once reinstalled to get all the updates ..

Which version FP do you have?

I use FP2003

If I click on (from the toolbar) View Folder List. I get all the folders in the left hand pane, then the root files under them. In the right hand pane I see the same.

If I click on a folder in the left pane, the content shows in the right pane.

If I click on the + sign next to the folder instead, then I see the content in the same left hand pane.

When I open a page from the left hand pane or the right hand pane by double clicking then the page appears in the right pane with folders etc still in the left pane.

If I click on the X button on the left pane near the top, then it closed the left pane altogether giving me all the folders etc filling the screen. I have to click on View/Folder List to get the two panes back.

Not sure if that helps you.

I have version 2002.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE 7 and got the same result with the text problem. So I uninstalled it again and now the text problem is resolved.

It's very strange becasue I have IE 7 installed on my other computer and don't have any problem adding text to the pictures. So I'll have to continue looking into that.

I'll keep messing with the folders and files. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling FrontPage to see if the default settings might get me back to where I was, but it came up with the same problem. I can work with it this way now that the text is working, it's just not as convenient.

Thanks,

Jim

It is a known bug between IE and photogallery. Usually this happens if IE is installed after FrontPage or after certain updates. Uninstalling and reinstalling usually cures the problem. However with IE 7 beta - as it is still beta version other bugs have also been reported, hopefull they will be ironed out before the full IE7 version comes out.

Now that I have returned to IE 6 on this computer the text problem is resolved.

I have tried to send you an email with screen shots of the layout problem I'm having, but the email was returned as undeliverable. Perhaps you have changed your email address since the last time we communicated on the email.

Thanks,

Jim

Yes I dont know exactly why IE stops the text from viewing, most wierd, two or three forum members had the problem and that was the answer .. oh well ...

I took the liberty of editing your post and removing the email address .... or you will get so much spam you will spend all day sorting it!!! Yes I probably have changed email address .. you can contact me at

Yes, thanks for that. I thought about it a few minutes after posting.

I have tried again to send the email, so hopefully you will have it by now. Hope it makes sense.
