View Full Version : Publish From Live Site to Local Hard Drive

I've been through this process many times before but never seen anything like this. I'm trying to publish the live site on the server back to my local hard drive. Process is: Open the live site on the server, recalculate links, from the file menu choose "publish site," tell system where to put the info on the hard drive, select option to publish changed pages only and include subsites, click Publish Website.

I then get a message "You specified identical destination folders for some of the files you are trying to copy. Make sure all destination files have unique names and try again."

I've tried this two ways. One attempt had info in the hard drive directory to which I was publishing. The other try was to publish to a blank directory. Same result in each instance.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Hi,
that can happen if a file name is the same except for upper/lower case i.e. hard drive copy has say index.html - server has Index.html

Check folders view of both live site and hard drive copy and see if you have any identical files.

Check this thread. I had exact same problem, but mine was cuased by duplicate files... literally!!! in the following link I give check out the screenshot I give a link to, and you will see what I mean. I am not saying this is your problem, but you are virtually describing the same thing, I even tried publishing to a blank directory and made no difference.

Hello MJ,

Thanks, once again, for sharing your expertise. Sometimes I get one of your solutions and say to myself "Why didn't I think of that?" In this case, I could *never* have come up with the solution. BTW - it worked flawlessly.

Glad it worked. I know I had the problem for some time before finding the solution. I truly believed all those duplicate files were indeed on the server, it was nly when I asked someone to login and delete them for me, that we found they were only "illusions" so to speak ... lol!

So it is thanks to google/microsoft!!
