Hi all,

I'm needing information please.

I've noticed that sometimes when I upload my website using FP2002 the progress bar spends 90% of it's time uploading something called "Thumbs.db".

I have a FP picture gallery on my site so I could understand if it was something like "thumbnails database", but it's not that particular page which is loading when "Thumbs.db" appears.

Also, it occurs when I've never touched my picture gallery and it always takes about 90% of the upload time.

I only upload updated pages.

It doesn't seem to do any harm to the published site but just what the heck is "Thumbs.db" and why does it appear at random?

Hope this makes sense. Any help appreciated.

Thanks, John

Hi, John.

The thumbs.db file actually is a file used by the Windows OS and has no bearing on your FP web. You can delete the file and not worry about uploading it. You may have several scattered around your hard drive. They are created when you are browsing a folder with Windows Explorer in "Tumbnail" view. It is basically a cached file for Windows and again, you can delete any or all of them.

Happy uploading!

Hi nmj,

thanks for the advice.

The file "Thumbs .db" was in an old version of my website which I kept in reserve in case my new version had problems.

It was in a folder called "_vti_cnf" which I have no idea about.

I hate tinkering with, or deleting, things I don't understand but I've ditched the file so hopefully that'll solve the problem.

Thanks again,

John

Yes, there are quite a few mysterious foulders and files like that. I found a Microsoft =http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/office/office97/reskit/fp98serk/A_SPFILE.mspx]list that explains the various special files and folders. It was written for FP 98, but much of it still applies.

Deleting those thumbs.db files should be no problem. This Microsoft article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;840270) addresses a different error with them, but confirms that they are created by Win Explorer and can be deleted.

Rest easy and good luck with your site!
