Hi all,
I have designed a simple site using Hover Buttons.
Frontpage tells me they should work on I.E. 3.0 and above ?
However, most of my friends are using 5.5 and above and sometimes the buttons work perfectly, sometimes the applet loads very slowly and sometimes it doesnt load at all - which means No Navigation !
How on earth can a simple feature behave so erratically ?
If it didnt work at all, it would make sense but how can a website pick and choose the days when it wants to work ?
An explaination would be great as this just does not make sense.

The only thing I can really say about Hover Buttons is that the code that M$/FP has is very shifty and the Hover Buttons thusly are just as shifty. Further FP Hover Buttons do not work in Netscape. While Netscape is a small percentage of web surfers, this is a "simple" situation to avoid.
Instead, why not use DHTML picture swap, or JavaScript? Many Scripts can be found that will give you the same effect as a Hover Button, but remain more reliable.
Hope I have been able to give you a bit of an explanation and some food for thought....:bounce:

Problem with the hover buttons is that the viewers browser gets them to work, rather than working from the server (hope that makes sens!!) so can play up terribly. I have also found though, that FP DHTML picture swop is not that good to use, has caused problems . But javascript mouse over is ideal. You can make images same as the hovers you already have. You can download a free programme for making the mouse over script, and there is a Front Page help section here (http://www.scriptfx.com/frontpagetips/mouseprogramme/mouse_over_programme.htm)

Thanks to both of you,
This is what I expected you to say and yes it does make sense.
I'm afraid that im already regretting my purchase of FP2002 as it has the same inherit problems of a lot of software....."yeah sorry mate it doesn't quite work yet" !!!!
Why can't software developers tell the truth - "well some of it doesn't work and probably never will, erm we released it too early and the guy who fixes the bugs was on holiday at the time"
O.k. sarcasm over, as you suggested - javascript is the answer.
Or what about standard 'rollover buttons' another FP2002 feature,i could use them if they are browser friendly ?
Excellent Forum

FrontPage is a very powerful tool. There are just about NO limits to what you can do with it. HOWEVER if you want it to do the work for you, then you will encounter some hinderances.
Just a bit about the DHTML in FP and Picture Swap, it actually is a JavaScript and it may cause problems with some browsers. After all DHMTL (Dynamic HTML) is a combination of JavaScript and HTML.
As for advice on rollover buttons...I personally do not really like buttons at all. I am a link kind of guy....so I can't really give you any advice on rollover buttons.

Sunny England....
hmmmmmmm must be in the Scillies then. Last time I was in England it was kinda rainy. Made me feel at home.
I haven't tried the 2002 rollover buttons, check them with netscape and if they don't work MandyJay can find you some that do.
